Wyoming Highway patrol may soon hold Bitcoin

The State of Wyoming could expand its pro-Bitcoin agenda while local authorities assess stablecoin issuance and reserve laws.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol Association has adopted the “Get Off Zero” initiative by Proof of Workforce, a nonprofit entity focused on Bitcoin (BTC) education and adoption for workers, unions, pensions, and municipalities.

By onboarding the program, the association could become the first state law enforcement labor union to hold BTC on its balance sheet.

While it remains unclear how much Bitcoin the Wyoming Highway Patrol Association may accumulate, the decision signals growing crypto interest within the state. In January, Wyoming lawmakers introduced a bill proposing to allocate 3% of the state’s sovereign funds to BTC, effectively creating a state Bitcoin reserve.

Authorities in the state also published job listings for blockchain developers ahead of stablecoin plans led by the Stable Token Commission, one of the first U.S. jurisdictions to establish a dedicated stablecoin oversight body.

Wyoming has been at the forefront of Web3-related legislative milestones. The state standardized laws regarding decentralized autonomous organizations and officially recognized DAOs as legal entities.  Many industry leaders, including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), hailed the move as a crucial step toward clarifying DAO treatment in courts and regulatory framework

Wyoming has also passed laws to protect crypto private keys, while its Senator Cynthia Lummis lobbied for a federal BTC reserve and scrutinized the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation over crypto debanking.
